Restorative Justice Week 2007

CURB has set its sights on the various institutions in Trinidad and Tobago which accommodate juvenile and adult offenders to highlight the incidences of sexual and other abuses against the inmates by staff and other inmates.

Since March 2007, CURB has been periodically exposing the abuses and lobbying for systemic changes to prevent their recurrence. Our efforts will escalate in November 2007 when we observe Restorative Justice Week with the theme "Not Part of the Sentence". Click Here for an innovative Weblog entry about the issue and Here for a Macromedia Flash file about stopping Prison Sexual Abuse.

Crime, Delinquency and Justice

spotlightCURB extends congratulations to Professor Ramesh Deosaran on the launch of his latest literary work, "Crime, Delinquency and Justice - a Caribbean Reader", which took place on 17th September, 2007 at the Crowne Plaza.

The 676-page book which was edited by Deosaran is a compilation of works from writers throughout the Caribbean and Latin America on issues relating to the various aspects of the criminal justice system in the region. Authors include Professor Deosaran, Chief Justice Satnarine Sharma and Justice Adrian Saunders of the Caribbean Court of Justice.

While there is only passing mention of true restorative justice by two of the authors, there are several interesting articles which highlight the issues connected with prison reform and victim rights. Included in these are articles on the work of the Jamaica Department of Corrections, Prison Recidivism in Trinidad and Tobago and the state of Human Trafficking Victimization in the Dominican Republic.

Of the aforementioned articles, the examination of the rehabilitation programmes touted by the Jamaica Department of Corrections proved to be the most recent with information as up-to-date as 2006. Its author, Marlyn J. Jones, skilfully contrasted the official statements of the correctional authorities and government data on the correctional system with actual developments, systemic operations and the contributions of several inmates and concludes that the promised rehabilitation of offenders has been more symbolic than operational.

Although some may consider it to be 'heavy reading', CURB wishes to endorse the sterling work which comprises this Caribbean Reader and believes that it is valued more than the TT$170.00 price tag. We hope that Professor Deosaran and others shall continue to conduct regional research and produce similar works which explore the application and implementation of Caribbean restorative justice jurisprudence.
